Indian Ocean
Delhi fusion pioneers running since 1990, folding folk melodies and classical ragas into jam-band rock. Kandisa is still a campfire hymn across India.
Indian Ocean formed in Delhi around 1990 and spent years playing college halls and small auditoriums before Indian rock had much of an audience to speak of. The early lineup paired Susmit Sen's rolling guitar figures with Asheem Chakravarty's tabla and vocals, alongside Rahul Ram on bass and Amit Kilam on drums, and the songs tended to stretch out across long instrumental passages sung in Hindi and other Indian languages.
The band scored Anurag Kashyap's Black Friday, which produced "Bandeh", and later worked on Peepli Live. Chakravarty died in 2009 and Sen left a few years afterwards, with Ram and Kilam carrying the group on.
