5 Seconds of Summer
Sydney pop-rock veterans who long outgrew their boy-band billing — arena-sized hooks, real instruments, and a pop-punk past that still sneaks into the setlist.
5 Seconds of Summer formed in Sydney in 2011, beginning as a group of school friends posting covers online before signing a major-label deal and touring internationally. Their early material leaned on pop-punk templates — fast tempos, palm-muted guitars, choruses built for crowds — and they broke through with singles including "She Looks So Perfect" and "Youngblood".
Over subsequent albums the band moved toward a broader pop-rock sound, adding synthesisers, funk-inflected basslines and more polished production while keeping the four-piece guitar-band setup. Luke Hemmings handles most lead vocals, with Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin all contributing to writing and singing. Live, they work at arena scale, and older pop-punk material still surfaces alongside the later pop songs.
