Plain White T's formed in the Chicago area in the late 1990s, with Tom Higgenson on lead vocals, and spent their early years in the Midwest pop-punk circuit before signing to Fearless Records. Their music combines punk-derived guitar pop with acoustic-based songwriting and straightforward, melodic choruses.
The band is best known for "Hey There Delilah", an acoustic ballad written by Higgenson that became a major international hit some years after it was first recorded. They followed it with further radio singles including "1, 2, 3, 4", and have continued to tour and release albums, with a lineup that has shifted around Higgenson over the years.
