John Prine
A Chicago mail carrier who wrote "Sam Stone" and "Angel from Montgomery" and spent five decades finding the joke inside the heartbreak. Died in 2020.
John Prine was delivering mail in Maywood, Illinois, and playing Chicago folk clubs when Kris Kristofferson heard him and helped him to a record deal. His 1971 debut held 'Sam Stone', 'Hello in There' and 'Angel from Montgomery', songs written in his twenties from the point of view of people much older and more worn down.
He wrote plainly, with a sharp ear for the absurd, and sang in a voice that grew rougher after treatment for throat cancer in the late 1990s. He co-founded Oh Boy Records to put out his own work and recorded duet albums with Iris DeMent and others. He died in April 2020 of complications from COVID-19.
