Sound-design-first bass — glitchy, precise and genre-fluid, the kind of set that exists to show off what a sound system can actually do.

Nitepunk is the project of a Russian-born, Los Angeles-based producer whose work sits at the detail-obsessed end of bass music. The tracks tend to be built from tightly edited, heavily processed sound rather than familiar synth presets, with metallic textures, stop-start rhythms and abrupt shifts in tempo and register. Rather than settling into one club template, the material moves between trap, drum and bass, halftime and more abstract electro, held together by the sound design itself. Live, the emphasis falls on low end and stereo detail, which makes the work particularly dependent on the room it is played in.
