Papangu are from Recife in northeastern Brazil, and their music runs sludge and doom riffing alongside forró rhythms, baião melody and the odd-metre turns of heavy progressive rock. Lyrics are in Portuguese and draw on the landscape, folklore and hardship of the sertão. Their debut, Holoceno, brought them attention outside Brazil among listeners following both the progressive and the heavier ends of the scene.
