Apocalyptica

1 upcoming festival

Classically trained Finnish cellists who started by covering Metallica and never stopped headbanging — symphonic metal where the strings genuinely shred.

Apocalyptica formed in Helsinki in 1993, made up of cellists trained at the Sibelius Academy. Their debut, Plays Metallica by Four Cellos, consisted entirely of Metallica arrangements for cello quartet, and its success established the group's approach.

Later albums added original compositions, drums and guest vocalists, moving the band toward symphonic and alternative metal while keeping the cellos at the front. Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen and Perttu Kivilaakso have been the core of the lineup for most of its history. Their best-known songs include "Nothing Else Matters" and the collaboration "I Don't Care".
