Arcade Fire came together in Montreal around 2001, with Win Butler and Regine Chassagne at the centre and Butler's brother Will among the long-serving members. Early albums drew on strings, accordion, pipe organ and hurdy-gurdy alongside guitars, and the players swap instruments mid-set. 'Funeral' established the template, 'The Suburbs' took the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2011, and 'Reflektor' pulled the group toward disco and Haitian rhythms, a strand Chassagne had introduced earlier. Songs like 'Wake Up' and 'Rebellion (Lies)' are built around wordless massed vocals that large outdoor crowds sing back.
