Catalonia's dembow provocateur — Auto-Tuned dancehall glamour made for the club at 3 a.m.
Bad Gyal is the stage name of Alba Farelo, born in 1997 and raised in Vilassar de Mar in Catalonia, the eldest of five children of actor and voice-actor Eduard Farelo; her younger sister Irma also performs, as Mushkaa. She studied fashion design at the University of Barcelona while working at a call centre, and it was during that time, in 2016, that she released a Catalan-language version of Rihanna's "Work".
She sings in Catalan and Spanish over dancehall, reggaeton and trap productions, using heavy Auto-Tune as a stylistic choice rather than a correction. Her songs favour slow, bass-heavy dembow rhythms and repeated vocal hooks, and her live shows lean on choreography and club-oriented staging.
She built her early career independently, releasing the Slow Wine Mixtape with producer Pablo Martínez in 2016 and Worldwide Angel in 2018, made with Jam City, Dubbel Dutch, Florentino and El Guincho. Those records carried her from Barcelona to tours of the United States, Mexico and Asia, and made her a central figure of the Spanish neoperreo scene.
She signed to Interscope Records and Aftercluv in 2019. Her track "Santa María", featuring Busy Signal, became her first charting single in Spain and went gold, and her collaboration with Omar Montes, "Alocao", reached number one in Spain and is certified five times platinum.
Bad Gyal released the project Warm Up and the compilation Sound System: The Final Releases in 2021, followed by her debut album, La joia, in 2024, and a second album, Más Cara.
