Kali Uchis is the recording name of Karly-Marina Loaiza, born in 1994 and raised between Alexandria, Virginia and Pereira, Colombia. She began with the self-released mixtape Drunken Babble before the 2015 EP Por Vida drew wider attention for its retro-soul arrangements and languid vocal style. Her debut album Isolation appeared in 2018.
She has since alternated between English and Spanish-language records — Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios), which contained "telepatía", then Red Moon in Venus and Orquídeas — moving between neo-soul, bolero-tinged balladry, reggaeton and R&B. She has also recorded with Tyler, the Creator, Gorillaz and Daniel Caesar, whose "Get You" features her.
