Chappell Roan is the stage name of Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, who grew up in Willard, Missouri, and was signed to Atlantic as a teenager before the label dropped her in 2020. She stayed in Los Angeles, took work outside music, and kept writing with producer Dan Nigro, whose imprint put out her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, in 2023. The record spread slowly over the following year, helped along by an opening run on Olivia Rodrigo's tour, and she won the Grammy for Best New Artist in 2025.
