Dordán
Galway trio splicing Irish traditional tunes with baroque chamber music — a pairing that shouldn't work and does.
Dordán has been playing together since the early 1990s, built around the tin whistle of Mary Bergin, one of the most closely studied whistle players in Irish music, alongside harp and fiddle. The group's name is the Irish word for a drone or a humming sound.
In practice the repertoire moves between jigs, reels and slow airs and pieces from the baroque repertoire, with the harp doing much of the work of holding the two idioms in the same room. The traditional material is played straight, without arrangements that soften it, and the baroque pieces are taken on with the same instrumentation rather than being adapted for it.
