Tuam's finest — big-hearted Galway rock built for roaring back at, with 'N17' and 'I Useta Lover' guaranteed singalongs.
The Saw Doctors formed in Tuam, County Galway, in the mid-1980s around singer Davy Carton and guitarist Leo Moran, who have anchored the band through every lineup since. Mike Scott of The Waterboys, then living in Ireland, took an early interest and brought them out as support, which is how a small-town band with accordion and jangling guitars ended up on bigger stages.
"I Useta Lover" spent months at number one in Ireland in 1990 and sold in quantities no Irish single had managed before. "N17" is named after the road out of Tuam and is sung as an emigrant's lament, which is why crowds tend to take over the chorus. The songs stay local: parish dances, county football, people who left and people who stayed.
