Mik Pyro made his name as the singer of Republic of Loose, the Dublin band that spent the 2000s pushing funk, soul and hip-hop rhythms through a distinctly Irish sense of humour. His voice is the centre of it: a high, ragged falsetto that can slide into a spoken aside mid-line, and a habit of talking to the room between verses. Republic of Loose singles such as "Comeback Girl" put that combination on Irish radio.
Away from the band he performs under his own name, working the same territory of soul and funk covers alongside his own material, usually with the between-song commentary intact.
