Denise Chaila
Zambian-Irish rapper out of Limerick with a lawyer's precision and a poet's ear — 'Chaila' rewrote what an Irish rap record could sound like.
Denise Chaila was born in the Chikankata-Mazabuka district of Zambia, daughter of Elijah and Lydia Chaila, a neurological consultant and a hospital radiographer. The family moved to Ireland when she was three, first to Dublin and then to Limerick. She attended Kings Hospital Secondary School before studying English literature and sociology at the University of Limerick.
She began performing on the Limerick scene in 2012 and appeared on Rusangano Family's 2016 album Let the Dead Bury the Dead before releasing her own debut EP, Duel Citizenship, in 2019. She now works out of Narolane, the label and collective she runs with God Knows and MuRli, both formerly of Rusangano Family.
Her records lean on live bass, loose drums and long stretches of spoken word rather than trap templates. Her delivery shifts register mid-verse, moving from clipped rhyme schemes to something closer to recitation.
The 2020 album Go Bravely took the Choice Music Prize for Irish Album of the Year. Its track "Chaila" builds itself around the correct pronunciation of her surname, spelling it out over the beat, and "Anseo" does something similar with the roll call familiar from Irish classrooms.
Cillian Murphy played her music on his BBC Radio 6 show and interviewed her for Port magazine. She performed at the National Concert Hall in Dublin in February 2020 and recorded a solo set at the National Gallery of Ireland for the Other Voices: Courage series that May. In 2022 she opened for Ed Sheeran on the Irish dates of his Mathematics tour.
