Maighread & Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill

1 festival played

Donegal sisters whose harmonies carry the sean-nós tradition straight out of Rann na Feirste — unhurried and unadorned.

Maighread and Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill grew up in the Donegal Gaeltacht village of Rann na Feirste, in a family of singers, and learned much of their repertoire from their aunt Neilí Ní Dhomhnaill. Both sang on Skara Brae, the 1971 record made with their brother Mícheál Ó Domhnaill and Dáithí Sproule that set Irish-language song against guitars in open tunings.

Tríona went on to the Bothy Band, where she sang and played clavinet, and later to Nightnoise and Relativity. Maighread built her reputation as a singer of songs in Irish, working largely unaccompanied or with sparse backing. The two recorded together as a duo on Idir an Dá Sholas, sharing verses and joining in close, low-key harmony, with the words left plain enough to follow.
