Kean Kavanagh

1 festival played

Soft Boy Records' quiet centre — hazy, loose-limbed songs that drift between bedroom R&B and Irish indie without picking a side.

Kean Kavanagh grew up in Kildare and helped set up Soft Boy Records with Kojaque, the Dublin label that put out much of the pair's early work. He sings, writes and produces, and his voice turns up across the label's catalogue, including guest spots and hooks on Kojaque's tracks.

His own songs sit somewhere between soft-focus R&B and Irish guitar music, built on unhurried grooves and vocals kept low in the mix rather than pushed to the front. The production tends to stay slightly smudged at the edges, with drums that lag behind the beat and arrangements that leave gaps where a chorus might be expected.
