Dropkick Murphys formed in the Boston area in 1996, combining street punk with Irish traditional instrumentation — bagpipes, tin whistle, accordion, mandolin and banjo alongside guitars and gang vocals. Ken Casey has led the band throughout; Al Barr shared vocal duties for more than two decades after replacing original singer Mike McColgan.
Their songs frequently address working-class life, labour unions and Boston itself, and they have recorded traditional material as well as originals. "I'm Shipping Up to Boston", built on a Woody Guthrie lyric, became their best-known track after its use in film. The band has released numerous albums on independent labels and maintains a long-running tradition of hometown shows around St. Patrick's Day.
