Trained pianist who builds techno out of damaged textures and then lets it collapse into ambient drift. Longtime collaborator of Brian Eno.

Jon Hopkins studied piano at the Royal College of Music and spent his early career playing keyboards for Imogen Heap before moving into production. He co-produced Coldplay's Viva la Vida with Brian Eno, worked with Eno on Small Craft on a Milk Sea, and scored the film Monsters.

His own records run from the beatless Insides opener through the heavy, granular kick drums of Immunity and Singularity, both of which sequence long-form dance tracks into ambient piano pieces. He also made Diamond Mine with King Creosote, built around field recordings from the Fife coast, and Music for Psychedelic Therapy, which has no drums at all. Live he works standing at a table of controllers, with the sound tracked closely by visuals.
