Texas country crossed with grunge — ragged, loud, and closer to a rock show than a country one.

Koe Wetzel was born Ropyr Madison Koe Wetzel on July 14, 1992, in Pittsburg, Texas; one of his given names nods to outlaw country singer David Allan Coe. His mother toured as a country singer and brought him along early on, while his father worked in construction; Wetzel first performed on stage at age six.

He played linebacker at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, before choosing music over football. He formed Koe Wetzel and Konvicts, self-releasing an EP and a full album before the band's name was shortened around Noise Complaint (2016), the record considered his breakout; he still performs with a bassist, a drummer and two guitarists.

His songs pair country storytelling and a plainspoken drawl with distorted guitars and loud, grunge-indebted arrangements, and his lyrics often deal with drinking, small-town life and self-destruction in blunt terms. Wetzel has described his own sound as "Hillbilly Punk-Rock," a mix he traces to a childhood spent on country, hip-hop, rap and grunge acts like Nirvana.

He built an audience largely through relentless touring in Texas and Oklahoma before reaching a national listenership, and his live shows lean heavily toward the rock end of his catalogue. Harold Saul High (2019) charted on the Billboard 200, and Sellout (2020) took its title from his signing to the major label Columbia Records. In 2023, he became a partner in a Fort Worth restaurant, bar and live-music venue called Koe Wetzel's Riot Room.
