Elizabeth Grant released music as Lizzy Grant before settling on Lana Del Rey, and "Video Games" in 2011 set the terms: slow tempo, string arrangement, vocals sung almost under her breath. Born to Die followed in 2012 and sold heavily, though an early Saturday Night Live performance drew enough criticism to become a story in itself.

Her later albums work with a small set of collaborators, Dan Auerbach on Ultraviolence and Jack Antonoff on Norman Fucking Rockwell! and after, and the writing has moved toward longer, more conversational songs with sparse piano behind them. California, driving, and older American pop are recurring subjects.
