Phoenix
Versailles band who made French pop sound weightless, from 'If I Ever Feel Better' to the guitar hooks of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.
Phoenix formed in Versailles in the late 1990s around Thomas Mars, Christian Mazzalai, Laurent Brancowitz and Deck d'Arcy, with roots in the same suburban scene that produced Air and Daft Punk. Their early records leaned on soft-rock chords, clean guitar lines and Mars singing in English, delivered without much strain.
Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix in 2009 brought them a much wider audience, with "1901" and "Lisztomania" built on stacked synths and short repeating guitar figures. Later albums such as Bankrupt! and Ti Amo kept the widescreen keyboards and added Italian pop and disco references. Live, they play at full volume with Mars regularly walking into the crowd.
