Oxford five-piece who abandoned guitar-rock at the height of it for drum programming, Ondes Martenot and Thom Yorke's falsetto over collapsing rhythms.
Radiohead formed at Abingdon School near Oxford in the mid-1980s: Thom Yorke, brothers Jonny and Colin Greenwood, Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway. "Creep" made them briefly a one-hit band abroad, then The Bends and OK Computer established them as something else, with Jonny Greenwood's guitar arrangements and Yorke's high, thin vocal lines.
Kid A and Amnesiac replaced much of the guitar with synthesisers, sampled strings and programmed drums, a shift that split listeners at the time. In Rainbows was released in 2007 as a pay-what-you-want download. The members have long-running side work, including Yorke's solo records and Atoms for Peace, and Greenwood's film scores for Paul Thomas Anderson.
