Sports began in Norman, Oklahoma, initially as a full band before narrowing to the project of Cale Chronister, working with collaborator Christian Theodore. The music sits between indie pop and soft funk: clean guitar lines, warm analogue synths, drum machines and a low, unhurried vocal delivery. Comparisons to Mac DeMarco and to late-night 1980s R&B come up often, though the songs are more concerned with groove and texture than with retro pastiche.
