Oklahoman who wrote and self-released his early records while serving in the Navy, and kept the ragged, one-take feel after the arenas arrived.

Zach Bryan was born in Okinawa to a Navy family and raised in Oologah, Oklahoma. He posted phone recordings of his own songs to YouTube while still enlisted, and "Heading South," filmed outdoors in one take, spread widely enough to get him a record deal. He was discharged in 2021 to pursue music.

He writes fast and releases a lot: "American Heartbreak" ran to thirty four tracks, and a self-titled album followed with "I Remember Everything," a duet with Kacey Musgraves. His voice is rough and pushed hard, the instrumentation mostly acoustic guitar, fiddle and drums, and he often keeps takes with audible flaws. Live, he plays stadiums with the same band arrangements and little production.
