Anna Von Hausswolff
Pipe-organ doom hymns — sacred music for the beautifully unwell, where cathedral drones meet gothic songcraft at genuinely tectonic volume.
Anna von Hausswolff was born in Gothenburg in 1986 and studied architecture at Chalmers University of Technology before turning to music full-time. She comes from an artistic family: her father is the sound and visual artist Carl Michael von Hausswolff, and her sister Maria has also contributed vocals to her records.
Her debut single, "Track of Time," appeared in 2010 alongside the album Singing from the Grave, which the Swedish press received warmly. Early shows included opening for Tindersticks, Lykke Li and M. Ward, a tour of Brazil with Taken by Trees and Taxi Taxi!, and slots at Swedish festivals including Way Out West, Peace and Love, Storsjöyran, Arvika and Made Festival.
She writes and performs largely on the pipe organ, recording in churches and concert halls to make use of specific instruments, and her music moves between song forms and long instrumental drone pieces. Combining the organ's sustained volume with a high, keening voice sometimes compared to Diamanda Galás, her records touch on funeral doom, gothic rock and neoclassical dark wave.
Her 2013 album Ceremony, released in North America by Other Music Recording Co., drew praise from NPR and coverage from Pitchfork and the New York Times. Dead Magic (2018), produced with Sunn O)))'s Randall Dunn and recorded on the pipe organ of Copenhagen's Marble Church, was followed by guest appearances on records by Wolves in the Throne Room, Swans and Sunn O))).
Later work has moved further toward wordless composition, with the organ carrying the weight alone: All Thoughts Fly (2020) was recorded on the pipe organ of Gothenburg's Örgryte New Church, a replica of a German instrument and the largest organ in the world tuned to quarter-comma meantone temperament. Her sixth album, Iconoclasts, released in 2025, featured guest appearances from Iggy Pop and Ethel Cain.
