Good Charlotte formed in Waldorf, Maryland in 1996 around twin brothers Joel Madden, who sings, and Benji Madden, on guitar. The band's sound combines fast pop-punk arrangements with hooks drawn from mainstream pop and, on some tracks, hip-hop-influenced production and a strain of goth-tinged imagery.

Their commercial peak came in the early 2000s with singles including "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," "The Anthem" and "I Just Wanna Live," which put the band in heavy rotation on radio and music television. Lyrically the group often returned to class resentment, family and small-town frustration. Following a hiatus, the band resumed recording and touring.
