High-country North Carolina band led by multi-instrumentalist Liam Purcell, tagged by No Depression as "the future of bluegrass" — innovation without abandoning the form.

Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road is a bluegrass band from the high country of western North Carolina, around Boone and Deep Gap. It is led by Liam Purcell, a multi-instrumentalist who plays mandolin, fiddle and guitar and handles much of the singing; the group began while its members were still young and has drawn attention through the bluegrass association and festival world.

The band works in a progressive vein, keeping traditional acoustic instrumentation and tight vocal harmony while writing original material and reaching outside standard bluegrass repertoire. The region's old-time and string-band traditions are audible in the playing, alongside a willingness to push the arrangements.
