Mattie & Debbie is the duo project of Sean Trischka and Stash Wyslouch, two musicians who came up through the New England bluegrass scene. Wyslouch is a guitarist and singer known for his work with The Deadly Gentlemen and Joy Kills Sorrow, bands that pushed string-band instrumentation toward songwriting drawn from outside the tradition; Trischka is a drummer and singer. Together they pair flatpicked guitar and close two-part harmony with pop song structures, keeping the picking rooted in bluegrass technique while the melodies and arrangements borrow from radio pop. The result sits closer to a songwriting duo than to a conventional bluegrass band.
