Stirling began violin lessons at age five, growing up in a household that could only afford half-length weekly lessons. She first drew wider attention in 2010 as a quarter-finalist on America's Got Talent, billed on the show as a 'hip hop violinist', and had already started posting choreographed performances to a YouTube channel she created in 2007.

Her recorded work ranges across classical repertoire by Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Vivaldi alongside original songs and soundtrack covers, set to pop, rock and electronic dance production. The 2012 video for 'Crystallize' became the eighth most watched on YouTube that year, and her cover of 'Radioactive' with Pentatonix won Response of the Year at the first YouTube Music Awards in 2013.

Stirling's debut album sold 200,000 copies in Germany alone, earning a platinum certification there along with further certifications in Austria, Switzerland and Poland, and a Billboard Music Award nomination for Top Dance/Electronic Albums. Her second album, Shatter Me, reached number two on the Billboard 200 and won Top Dance/Electronic Album at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards.

By August 2014 she had sold a million singles worldwide, and her YouTube channel has since grown past 13 million subscribers and 3 billion total views. Forbes named her to its 30 Under 30 in Music list for 2015, citing her rise from television talent show to headline-scale touring act.
