Naughty by Nature's frontman, whose delivery on the group's early singles still sets the bar for a hook — 'Hip Hop Hooray' on demand.
Treach was born Anthony Shawn Criss on December 2, 1970, in East Orange, New Jersey, where he later attended East Orange Campus High School. He formed the group with high school friends Vin Rock and DJ Kay Gee in 1986, when it was still called New Style, five years before its breakout.
The group broke through in 1991 with 'O.P.P.' and followed it with 'Hip Hop Hooray' and 'Feel Me Flow,' records that paired mainstream-sized hooks with Treach's dense, fast, tightly enunciated verses.
Alongside his music, Treach built a steady acting career, with film roles in The Meteor Man, Jason's Lyric and Love and a Bullet alongside Juice and Oz, plus guest spots on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Person of Interest and Blue Bloods.
His younger brother, Diesel, raps in the Rottin Razkals, a group closely affiliated with Naughty by Nature. Treach was also a close friend of Tupac Shakur, collaborating on Shakur's '5 Deadly Venomz' and appearing in the videos for 'So Many Tears' and 'Temptations'; after Shakur's 1996 death he released the tribute track 'Mourn You Til I Join You.'
