Brixton outfit splicing acid house with country, gospel and blues into their own self-styled hybrid — the band behind the song that opens every episode of The Sopranos.
Alabama 3 came together in Brixton, south London, built around Rob Spragg (Larry Love) and Jake Black (the Very Reverend D. Wayne Love), who died in 2019. They described their own music as "sweet pretty country acid house music", and the mix is roughly that: programmed beats and dub bass under harmonica, slide guitar, gospel harmony and preacher-style spoken delivery, often with a streak of dark humour.
Their 1997 debut Exile on Coldharbour Lane included "Woke Up This Morning", the track that carried their name well beyond the UK. The group has continued recording and touring for decades, with a large rotating cast of players and a live show closer to a revival meeting than a conventional rock set. In the United States they are billed as A3.
