American DJ who spent a decade on widescreen club techno, then made a synth-pop record under her own name and kept doing both.

Avalon Emerson grew up in Arizona and came up through the Bay Area party scene before settling into a DJ career that took her to Berlin and, later, London. Her early productions leaned on bright, fast, melodic techno with a knack for a hook, and her mixes tend to move across tempo rather than hold a single groove for an hour.

The shift to singing came with a record credited to Avalon Emerson & The Charm, built from guitars, synths and her own soft, close-mic'd vocals, closer to 1990s indie pop than to a club track. She kept the DJ work going alongside it, so a set can land anywhere between dream pop edits and hard, driving techno depending on the room.
