Nineties country balladeer — 'Love, Me' and a long run of hits sung in a tenor built for the big emotional swing.
Collin Raye was born Floyd Elliott Wray in De Queen, Arkansas, and spent his early career playing clubs and lounges, including a long stretch with his brother Scott in a group billed as the Wray Brothers. He signed with Epic Records and released his first solo album, All I Can Be, in 1991, changing his professional name to Collin Raye around the same time.
His voice is a clear, wide-ranging tenor that he tends to push hardest at the ends of choruses, and much of his best-known material sits in the ballad and story-song territory that dominated country radio in the 1990s. Alongside straightforward love songs, Raye recorded a run of narrative singles dealing with alcoholism, faith, prejudice and family, among them "In This Life", "Little Rock", "I Think About You" and "Not That Different". He has continued to record and tour steadily since, and also performs gospel and inspirational material.
