EARTHGANG
Atlanta duo of Olu and WowGr8, signed to Dreamville, trading verses in two wildly different voices over soul-warped, elastic production.
Olu, formerly known as Johnny Venus, and WowGr8, once Doctur Dot, met on a school trip at Benjamin E. Mays High School in Atlanta and formed EARTHGANG in 2008, recording together steadily from there.
Their run of early releases includes the 2010 EP The Better Party, recorded in dorm rooms and closets, followed by the mixtapes Mad Men and Good News in 2011. Their debut album, Shallow Graves for Toys, came out in 2013, with a follow-up, Strays with Rabies, in 2015.
They joined J. Cole's Dreamville label in 2017 and issued a trilogy of EPs, Rags, Robots and Royalty, ahead of their major-label debut album, Mirrorland, in 2019, appearing across the label's compilation work along the way.
The records lean on Southern rap tradition run through psychedelic soul, with production that bends and warps rather than sitting still. Much of the appeal comes from the contrast in delivery: Olu's high, elastic, theatrical approach against WowGr8's lower, blunter cadence.
They co-founded the Spillage Village collective alongside JID, 6LACK, Hollywood JB, JordxnBryant, Mereba and Benji.
