London jazz as a party rather than a seminar — Afrobeat and dancehall pulling the horns along, and a drummer who conducts the room from behind the kit.
Ezra Collective are a London five-piece formed in 2012, built around drummer Femi Koleoso and bassist TJ Koleoso with saxophone, trumpet and keyboards. They came out of the same London scene as a number of other young jazz groups, several of them connected through the Tomorrow's Warriors programme.
Their music draws on Afrobeat, calypso, hip-hop and dancehall as much as on straight jazz, with grooves that stay danceable and horn lines written for impact rather than intricacy. The band won the Mercury Prize in 2023 for the album Where I'm Meant To Be. Live, Femi Koleoso speaks to the crowd between tunes and steers the pacing from the drum kit.
