Saint Etienne formed in 1990 around Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs, two friends from Croydon, with Sarah Cracknell joining as singer shortly afterwards. Their first single was a house-inflected cover of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart", and the debut album Foxbase Alpha set the template: sixties pop melody and girl-group harmony placed over dance production and samples.
Across records including So Tough, Tiger Bay and Finisterre the group has returned repeatedly to London as a subject, sometimes explicitly, and has extended that interest into documentary film work. Stanley is also a music writer, and the band's records carry a collector's attention to pop history.
