Fat Dog
South London's unhinged rave-punk cult — klezmer, techno, and total mayhem, a live show that feels like a cult initiation in the best way.
Fat Dog formed in South East London in 2020, during the Covid lockdowns, around singer Joe Love. Long before releasing any music, the band built a reputation on the London club circuit for shows loud and chaotic enough that NME later called them the wildest live act of 2023. They signed to Domino in 2023.
Their debut single, "King of the Slugs," arrived in August 2023: a seven-minute track co-produced with James Ford that runs punk into techno over its length. "All the Same" followed in January 2024, backed by a music video featuring actor Neil Bell, with a remix by Mandy, Indiana released the next month.
Onstage, the band leaned on costume as much as sound. Drummer Johnny Hutch played every gig behind a latex dog mask, earning the nickname Doghead, and has said the disguise helped him manage anxiety as an autistic performer. He left the band in September 2024, with Ellis D taking over on drums.
The debut album, WOOF., was released on Domino in September 2024. Joe Love has pointed to an unlikely source for the band's sound: the music from the video game Serious Sam, which he cites as a direct influence on Fat Dog's mix of dance rhythm and klezmer-tinged melody.
