Gogol Bordello formed in New York in 1999 around Eugene Hütz, a singer and guitarist who left Ukraine after the Chernobyl disaster and spent time in refugee camps before settling in the United States. The band's membership has drawn on musicians from several countries, and their sound combines punk rock with Romani and Eastern European folk music, accordion, violin and dub and Latin elements.
The group built its reputation on chaotic, high-energy live shows and on songs dealing with migration, displacement and cultural mixing. Hütz has also worked as an actor, appearing in the film Everything Is Illuminated.
