Los Mirlos
Legendary Peruvian cumbia amazónica band since 1973 — hypnotic surf-guitar jungle grooves that invented a genre and still fill any floor offered.
Los Mirlos formed in 1973 in Moyobamba, in Peru's San Martín region, and were among the groups that shaped cumbia amazónica — the Amazonian strain of Peruvian cumbia. Their sound pairs the genre's rolling percussion and organ with reverb-soaked, surf-inflected electric guitar lines that imitate birdsong and jungle atmosphere, usually built around repeating instrumental hooks rather than long vocal passages.
The band's early recordings circulated widely in Peru and later found a second life through reissue compilations of Peruvian cumbia aimed at listeners outside Latin America, which brought them international touring and a younger audience. Los Mirlos have continued to perform and record over five decades, with the group's founding figure Jorge Rodríguez Grández at the centre.
