Los Mirlos
Legendary Peruvian cumbia amazónica band since 1973 — hypnotic surf-guitar jungle grooves that invented a genre and still fill any floor offered.
Los Mirlos began when several of its founders left Moyobamba for Lima in 1972, signing the following year with the label Infopesa, which would eventually release nine studio albums and two compilation records by the group. That move from the San Martín region to the capital put Amazonian musicians in touch with Lima's recording industry at a formative moment for cumbia amazónica.
The band's guitar-led sound draws on the psychedelic and surf rock that members heard in groups like Los Destellos and Los Chamas, reworked through cumbia's rolling percussion and organ. Los Mirlos leaned into their jungle origins deliberately, using reverb-heavy guitar lines to suggest birdsong and forest atmosphere rather than singing about it directly.
Recordings issued in Mexico by Discos InterGas during the 1970s and 80s built an unexpected following there, and in 2017 the band planned its first large-scale Mexican tour. The dates were postponed after the Mexico City earthquake of that September halted show events across the country, before later reissue compilations extended the group's reach to audiences well beyond Peru.
A documentary on the band, Mirlo's Dance, premiered at the Lima Film Festival in 2022 and reached Peruvian cinemas commercially in February 2024. Jorge Rodríguez Grández, the group's founding lead voice, remains at the centre of a lineup still performing more than five decades after it started.
