Lyle Lovett was born in 1957 and raised in Klein, Texas, near Houston, and began recording for MCA/Curb in the mid-1980s. His songs pair conversational, often deadpan lyrics with arrangements that move freely between country, western swing, gospel, blues and jazz, and he has never fitted neatly into mainstream Nashville categories.
He is best known for touring with His Large Band, an expansive ensemble with horns, backing vocalists and a jazz-leaning rhythm section, though he also performs in stripped-back acoustic settings. Songs such as "If I Had a Boat" and "She's No Lady" are long-standing parts of his repertoire. Lovett has won Grammy Awards for his recordings and has also worked as an actor, appearing in several Robert Altman films.
