The Sahara's most electrifying guitarist in a rare stripped-down solo set — hypnotic Tuareg desert blues up close, no amplifier wall required.

Mdou Moctar is a Tuareg guitarist and songwriter from Agadez, in northern Niger. He built his first guitar himself and circulated his earliest recordings on memory cards traded between mobile phones across the Sahel, before wider release brought his playing to audiences outside the region. He also starred in Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai, a Tamasheq-language film loosely modelled on Purple Rain.

His music sets rapid, ornamented lead lines and Tamasheq vocals against the circular rhythms of Tuareg assouf, with lyrics that touch on love, faith and the political situation in Niger. Albums including Ilana: The Creator, Afrique Victime and Funeral for Justice pushed the style toward hard rock volume, while solo and acoustic performances leave the guitar work and the vocal exposed.
