The California Honeydrops
An Oakland band that started busking in BART stations and still plays like the crowd is three feet away — second-line joy, coast edition.
The California Honeydrops began in Oakland in 2007, with the band's origins in impromptu playing in the city's BART stations. Led by singer, guitarist and trumpeter Lech Wierzynski, the group draws on New Orleans second-line rhythms, Delta blues, gospel and 1960s soul and R&B.
The band is known primarily as a live act, often abandoning the setlist, playing without barriers between stage and audience, and moving into the crowd mid-song. They have released a long run of albums independently and tour heavily throughout the United States.
