Allah-Las
Los Angeles record-store clerks turned reverb evangelists — sun-bleached jangle and surf-edged garage psych that sounds recorded in 1966 and mixed somewhere near the Pacific.
Allah-Las formed in Los Angeles in 2008, with several members having met while working at the Amoeba Music store in Hollywood. The quartet's sound draws on mid-1960s garage rock, folk rock and surf instrumentals, built around trebly interlocking guitars, brushed and shuffling drums, and unhurried group harmonies. Their recordings favour analogue warmth and room ambience over polish, which has led them to be grouped with the wider revival of vintage-leaning West Coast guitar bands.
Their self-titled debut arrived in 2012 on Innovative Leisure, produced by Nick Waterhouse, and was followed by Worship the Sun, Calico Review and LAHS. Later records widened the palette somewhat, taking in Latin American and Mediterranean influences and occasional Spanish-language passages, though the core remains the reverb-heavy, mid-tempo jangle of the earlier material. The band also curates compilations and DJ sets drawn from obscure 1960s international rock and pop.
