Austin's virtuosic boogie machine — prog chops, garage soul, and tempo changes played like party tricks.
White Denim formed in Austin, Texas, in 2006, and has been anchored throughout by singer and guitarist James Petralli and bassist Steve Terebecki, with the wider line-up shifting over the years. Early records were noisy and lo-fi; the band gradually opened out into something looser and more musicianly.
Their sound draws on boogie and Southern rock, psychedelia, jazz-influenced improvisation and garage soul, with abrupt tempo shifts and extended instrumental passages that carry over into their live shows. Albums including D and Corsicana Lemonade are among their better-known releases, and they have long had a reputation as a hard-touring band.
