Hovvdy is the duo of Charlie Martin and Will Taylor, who began working together in Austin, Texas, in 2014. Both are drummers by background, and the project started with quiet, lo-fi home recordings before gradually filling out. The records — among them Cranberry, Heavy Lifter and True Love — favor soft, slightly blurred production, plainspoken lyrics about family and memory, and melodies that stay understated rather than resolving into big choruses. The two trade lead vocals and write separately as often as together, which gives the catalog two distinct but closely matched voices.
