Twice IBMA's entertainer of the year, a Haywood County five-piece whose western North Carolina bluegrass stretches to symphony collaborations.

Balsam Range formed in Haywood County, North Carolina, in 2007, naming themselves after the mountain range surrounding their home county after deciding "Great Balsam Range" sounded too grand. Marc Pruett, Tim Surrett and Caleb Smith were joined at the outset by fiddler and lead singer Buddy Melton, and their debut album, Marching Home, released that year with guest turns from Joe Diffie, Doyle Lawson, Tony Rice and Jerry Salley, produced the band's most-requested song, "Blue Mountain."

Later albums kept climbing the bluegrass charts. Last Train to Kitty Hawk topped Bluegrass Unlimited's National Survey in 2009, and Papertown, named for the paper-mill town of Canton, spent five months at number one and won Album of the Year at the 2013 IBMA awards. Five followed in 2014, its single "Moon Over Memphis" taking Song of the Year in 2015 alongside a Vocal Group of the Year win, and Mountain Voodoo took Album of the Year again in 2017.

From 2012 the band worked repeatedly with Zac Brown Band member John Driskell Hopkins, a connection that produced the 2013 album Daylight and eventually led to ties with the Atlanta Pops Orchestra, whose arrangements of the band's material underpin its symphony collaborations.

Alan Bibey joined on mandolin in 2022, replacing longtime member Darren Nicholson, and founding fiddler and lead singer Buddy Melton departed the band at the start of 2025, leaving Pruett, Surrett and Smith as the group's remaining original members.
