Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver
East Tennessee mandolin patriarch whose band is known for a cappella gospel quartets and for graduating three decades of bluegrass sidemen.
Doyle Lawson formed Quicksilver in 1979 after playing mandolin with Jimmy Martin, J.D. Crowe and the Country Gentlemen. Born in Kingsport, Tennessee, he built the band around his own mandolin and baritone singing, and made its unaccompanied gospel quartets a signature. The lineup changed steadily over four decades, and the roll of former members includes Jamie Dailey, Barry Scott, Terry Baucom and many others who went on to lead their own bands. Lawson retired the band from full-time touring in 2021 and has played selected dates since.
