Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo formed Daft Punk in Paris in 1993, after an earlier guitar band drew a dismissive review that gave them their name. Homework introduced the filtered, looping house sound that became associated with French dance music in the late 1990s, and Discovery leaned harder on disco samples, vocoders and anime imagery. From around 2001 the pair appeared only in robot helmets and never gave interviews unmasked.
Their 2006 and 2007 live shows, performed from inside an illuminated pyramid, reset expectations for what an electronic act could stage in an arena. Random Access Memories, released in 2013, replaced samples with session musicians. The duo announced a split in 2021.
