Grandaddy

1 festival played

Jason Lytle's fuzzy synth-and-guitar melancholy about obsolete machines and the people who loved them — 'The Sophtware Slump' still quietly prophetic.

Grandaddy formed in Modesto, California in the early 1990s around songwriter Jason Lytle, who wrote, sang and largely produced the band's material. Their sound pairs fuzzed guitars with analogue synthesisers and Lytle's high, frail voice, landing between lo-fi indie rock, space rock and something closer to soft progressive pop.

The band's central preoccupation — technology, obsolescence, the Central Valley landscape and the people stranded among all of it — runs through the records that established them, most prominently the 2000 album The Sophtware Slump. Grandaddy split in the mid-2000s and later reconvened, with Lytle continuing to write and record under the name.
