Jason Lytle's fuzzy synth-and-guitar melancholy about obsolete machines and the people who loved them — 'The Sophtware Slump' still quietly prophetic.

Grandaddy formed in Modesto, California, in 1992, built around songwriter Jason Lytle with bassist Kevin Garcia and drummer Aaron Burtch; guitarist Jim Fairchild and keyboardist Tim Dryden joined soon after. Lytle wrote, sang and largely produced the band's material, working mostly in home studios rather than commercial ones.

After a run of self-released cassettes and singles, the band signed to the US label Will Records, then to V2 Records through its UK subsidiary Big Cat Records, taking an exclusive deal with V2 as their profile grew through the late 1990s.

Their sound pairs fuzzed guitars with analogue synthesisers and Lytle's high, frail voice, landing between lo-fi indie rock, space rock and something closer to soft progressive pop. A recurring subject runs through the records that established the band: technology, obsolescence, the Central Valley landscape and the people stranded among all of it, most prominently on the 2000 album The Sophtware Slump.

The band released four studio albums before splitting in 2006, after which members pursued solo careers and other projects. Grandaddy reformed in 2012, and after several tours released a fifth album, Last Place, in 2017.

Bassist Kevin Garcia died in 2017 following a stroke, and the band cancelled its touring plans and returned to an extended hiatus. In 2024, Lytle revived the Grandaddy name for a sixth album, Blu Wav, followed by a reunion tour marking the 25th anniversary of The Sophtware Slump.
